A Map as Big as Your Child’s Imagination
There’s a whole new world launching today. It’s Kidlandia, a world that your kids build online and then turn into a souvenir high-quality printed map. Meant for parents and kids to use in tandem, the map becomes the catalyst for storytelling.
Kids drag and drop custom designed Kreaturs, ships, and castles into the land to create a visualization of their fantasy. In Rocking Rob City, I could be a queen or a princess, but choose to be president. I made a few landmark places for my kids, husband, and parents. Then, using the tools, I added cherubic-looking dragons, elephants, and other characters, including the humorous grumps. Each character has a back-story with personality traits and a place to write your own story.
When you’ve got your world just like you want it, click and create a custom printout on canvas. Your handiwork can be printed, framed, and hung on the wall. The printing process, glicée, uses tiny sprays of ink to create archival quality prints. The print is sealed with a flexible UV-protective polyvinyl coat (protection from grimy kidprints).
But this clever printed story map does not come cheap. Pricing begins at $40, but a framed print that’s ready to hang can cost $160. I’d like to see Kidlandia build a bit more into the storytelling tools and I’d also like them to have a more realistic map for kids who want to map real neighborhoods and real family trees. But, if you’re looking for a unique digital gift, start here.
